Holes is an English novel for young adults. The book is a about Stanley Yelnats, a young teenage boy from a poor family who has been 'cursed' with misfortune and bad luck since the time of Stanley's great-great grandfather. Stanley's misfortune takes a turn for the worse when he is accused of stealing a pair of shoes donated to an orphanage by the famous baseball player Clive 'Sweet Feet' Livingston. As punishment, Staley has to choose between going to jail and being sent to Camp Green Lake, a detention facility for juveniles, which, contrary to the name, is located in the middle of the desert.

Stanley chooses Camp Green Lake, but, on reaching the camp, he is confronted by Mr. Sir, the supervisor, who cautions him against getting on the bad side of the warden, Warden Walker. After initial difficulty and resentment, Stanley manages to befriend the other inmate of Tent D, a feral child named Zero and Mr. Pendanski, a supervisor. in order to supposedly build character, the warden makes the inmates dig holes all around the compound every day. But soon, Stanley discovers that the warden is doing this in search of the lost treasure of Kissin Kate Barlow, a legendary outlaw. As he digs more holes, Stanley discovers more secrets. Holes is a fascinating novel of intrigue, humour and excitement. This new edition of Holes has been published in paperback by Bloomsbury Publishing India Private Limited in 2000.
